Geomemories, the challenge of making a historical map out of millions of photos

During WW-II the allies took millions of aerial photos over Italia, also in Tuscany and Pisa. The idea is to put together a historical map showing the changes in time, for an example Pisa before and after the bombardments. There are a lot of challenges in this work as the photos needs to be rectified, corrected, georeferenced and stitched together. All these operations include methods from Image Processing, Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision. My task is to work with this as an ERCIM fellow during one year
