Most of the research activities of the department belong to the field of applied mathematics. The focus is on theoretical problems as well as problems connected with implementation of methods in the following areas:

  • mathematical optimization
  • nonsmooth analysis
  • differential equations
  • variational problems
  • probabilistic models of decision support systems
  • conditional independence structures
  • uncertainty in artificial intelligence

Jiří Outrata received the Award of the Czech Academy of Sciences for outstanding results in science, experimental research and innovations based on his achieved results in mathematical analysis of the so-called non-smooth and multivalued mappings. These results contribute to further advances of scientific field of mathematics as well as numerous applications in economics and industry.

Doc. Ing. Jiří Outrata, DrSc. has been awarded a University of Ballarat Adjunct Professorship, School of Science, Information Technology and Engineering, Australia.

Ing. Tomáši Kroupovi, Ph.D.

z Ústavu teorie informace a automatizace.

Ing. Tomáš Kroupa, Ph.D.

z Ústavu teorie informace a automatizace.

The Czech-Japan Seminars on Data Analysis and Decision Making under Uncertainty were initiated by two meetings held in Ishikawa and Čeladná in 1999. These meetings were financially supported by an international collaborative research project between the Czech Republic and Japan. The initial meetings were quite successful both in producing new results in the area of data analysis and decision-making under uncertainty and in bringing together an international group of researchers ready for mutual research cooperation.

The GAMM Activity Group's 2024 annual workshop, "Analysis of Partial Differential Equations," will be held at our institute from September 16 to 19, 2024. Founded in 2013, the Activity Group fosters and coordinates the cooperation of mathematicians working in the field of PDE analysis. It now has more than 80 members.

The Winter School of the Department of Decision-Making Theory is a popular meeting of students and researchers from the department and collaborating researchers from several Czech institutions as well as guests from abroad. This year, it is organized by  M. Studený, J.Vomlel, and J.Outrata. The scientific program covers the research interests of the department MTR UTIA and of our invited guests.

The department of Decision-Making Theory organizes a Mini-Symposium on secret sharing. The event offers three exceptional speakers: Carles Padro, Laszlo Csirmaz, and Mate Gyarmati. The Mini-Symposium is organized in a hybrid form. It is possible to participate either in person or connect virtually using the Zoom application. All three speakers will participate on-site.

The other option is to follow the online stream on YouTube.

A series of Workshops on Uncertainty Processing (WUPES) has been held in Czechia every third year since 1988. Proceedings from several previous workshops can be found on their websites ( WUPES'18, WUPES'15, WUPES'12, WUPES'09, and WUPES'06).

The department of Decision-Making Theory organizes a Mini-Symposium dedicated to three exceptional speakers: Manuel Herrera, Bruno Melo Brentan, and Ariele Zanfei. The Mini-Symposium is organized in a hybrid form. It is possible to participate either in person or connect virtually using the Zoom application.

The symposium will be held at UTIA, in Lecture hall No. 3 accessible from the lobby, on Thursday, March 17, 2022, starting at 14:00 CET.

VŘSR is a traditional workshop sequentially organized by colleagues from UTIA, IRAFM Ostrava University, and UI. The meeting is focused mainly on the presentation of fresh (inter) results of participating doctoral students and their subsequent discussion in a wider plenary of experienced science matadors. Contributions traditionally come from different areas of uncertainty processing.

The Sixteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty (ECSQARU 2021) will be organized by our institute on September 21-24, 2021.
